In Memory of a Dear Friend: Donald Michael Considine

By RICHIE CANNON

VANCOUVER - Originally, there was eight of us....just a small group for a game of golf on February 17. With it raining all week, I said to Noel Doyle, let's keep it small. We'll meet for dinner afterwards, have a few drinks and take it easy.

Donny Considine

What started with three couples, quickly grew to over 35 people for dinner. Everyone wanted to remember and have a toast to a man who was so tragically taken from us in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, in February 20, 1997. Ten years ago! I can hardly believe it when I think about this.

The thing about Donnie Considine was that when he was in the room, there were smiles, hugs and just a beautiful atmosphere. There is a 20 year age gap between Donnie and I but you would never have know it.

I could tell everyone about some memories I have of Donnie at the World Cup in Florida 1994. The golf trips, Whistler with family and friends, Donnie and myself talking about living together in the house that I live in today. Conor and Deidre Corduff living next door and Deidre not wanting us to see her knickers hanging on the clothesline.

When I started Shamrock Rovers, a local Irish side in 1995, he thought I was crazy but still encouraged and helped with advice. Of course, we were both single back then, so there are more stories that could never be told.

AT THE MEMORIAL DINNER for the late Donnie Considine were Pauline Considine, his son Ronan Considine, along with his girlfriend Jodie.

In closing, when I think about Saturday night, all I can think about were the people there - the Stacks; the Spireans; the Embersons; the Doyles; the Whites; the Shears family; Jim Ritchie with his girlfriend Denise; the Lovelocks; the Gray's; the Gillettes; and golf partner Neil - I think how grateful I am to meet all these people again, and how grateful I am for Donnie introducing me to them.

What a great day, with the golf, the people, and the spirit of my dear friend Donnie Considine. I know that he is playing golf in heaven and probably chatting up everyone, maybe even Marylyn Monroe...it wouldn't surprise me.
