Watt School of Irish Dance Training for World Championships

FORT ST. JOHN

- Four dancers from the Watt School of Irish Dance are busy training for the up and coming journey to Glasgow, Scotland where they will compete at the World Irish Dance Championships from April 1 to 8.

WORLD QUALIFYING dancers with the Watt School of Irish Dance - (L-R) Back: Cíara Watt (assistant teacher) Jennifer Potter, Jo Watt (teacher), Sarah Elson, Aisling Watt (assistant teacher). Front: Patricia Robertson, Hailey McGuire, Morgan Gee, Stevie Mazur.

This is only the second time in the history of these championships where they will not take place in Ireland but with a venue like the Royal Glasgow Concert Hall, it should be an exciting experience.

Five dancers from the school earned their way to Scotland by competing at the Western Canadian Irish Dance Championships which was held in Kelowna, B.C. This event attracted about 900 Irish dancers from Manitoba through B.C.

Attending the qualifying from the Watt School were: Morgan Gee, winning first place in the girls under 13; Hailey McGuire, second place, girls under 15; Sarah Elson, second place, girls under 17; Jennifer Potter, third place girls under 17 (Jennifer will be unable to attend the World's due to her university studies); Stevie Mazur, first place in the girls under 14 (She made history by obtaining a perfect score of 900 points which is first place from all nine judges).

Patricia Robertson, in the girls under 13 category was unable to compete at the Qualifying this year due to a foot injury, however Patricia and the other dancers will compete at the North American Irish Dance Championships which will take place this year in Ottawa, Ontario.

The Watt School and the community of Fort St. John extend their best wishes to these young performers as they represent their school and home town at these prestigious World Championships.
