Toronto Irish Person of the Year Proclaimed by Mayor of the City

TORONTO - Brian Farmer, the GAA Canadian County Board Chairman, was selected by the Toronto Irish Person of the Year Committee (under the leadership of County Waterford's Eddie Brett), to raise Ireland's Flag on March 12 at a public ceremony at Toronto's City Hall.

As part of the month long celebration of “Irish Heritage and Cultural Appreciation Month” proclaimed by Toronto mayor David Miller, Brain Farmer was deeply honoured to have been given this special privilege.

He dedicated the moment “… to the men and women of the Gaelic Athletic Association, and indeed to all, who gave their lives in the fight for Irish Freedom, a 32 County Ireland, everything for which the flag stands for.”

Irish Heritage and Cultural Appreciation Month

WHEREAS we are fortunate to live in a city where the fusion of many ethnic cultures offers a mosaic of rich traditions and heritage to be shared and celebrated. During this month we have an opportunity to recognize the significant contributions our Irish community make to the prosperity, vitality and success of Toronto.

People of Irish descent who immigrated to Canada and other countries showed great courage and determination, and theirs is a success story worth celebrating. Nowhere is this more evident than in Toronto where over half a million residents of Irish heritage make their home.

Each March our Irish community celebrates its rich culture, traditions and heritage with a month-long calendar of events that include the St. Patrick's Day parade, which is enjoyed by thousands of people of all ages, from different backgrounds and walks of life and the Grand Marshal's Ball.

NOW THEREFORE, I, Mayor David Miller, on behalf of Toronto City Council, do hereby proclaim March 2006 as "Irish Heritage and Cultural Appreciation Month" to recognize the significant contribution our large and vibrant Irish community make to our quality of life and the social and cultural development of Toronto.

Mayor David Miller
