The new shop is adjacent to and part of Austin Gourmet and will of course carry the famous John Bull meat pies. They're baked fresh daily and Doug has increased the size by 20 percent. The recipe has also been expanded to 36 varieties and they can be served hot at the deli or for take home for dinner. They will be sold both retail and wholesale.
John Bull British Bakery and Deli will be open just in time for the Christmas market. Just in time for patrons who are looking for all those specialty UK food items to help give the holiday that special taste of home.
John Bull will also carry a full line of British groceries, baked goods, breads, tatie scones as well as all the specialty bacons, sausages, black and white pudding, hams, haggis, British sweets, Christmas cakes, yule logs, Scottish shortbreads and many more specialty items. The deli will be geared towards sit-down or take-away, serving daily lunch, soup and sandwich specials, with John Bull meat pies always available.
Doug Crewe has been in the catering business since 1988, catering from the North Shore to the Fraser Valley for weddings, office parties, barbeques, anniversaries, birthdays, Christmas and New Year's Eve parties. Austin Gourmet also make wedding cakes.
Doug has been catering for Robbie Burns dinners at the Scottish Cultural Centre in Vancouver since 1990, and he also has a food tent every June at the B.C. Highland Games in Coquitlam.
Since Austin Gourmet is located in the Mallardville area, also known as the French Quarter, Doug said, "we sell tons of tourtières...it's Mallardville here and if you don't have good tourtière, they'll run you out of town.
"For instance, we are catering to the 60th anniversary of Our Lady of Fatima parish and we will be catering a French Canadian dinner for 330 people, starting with the traditional split pea soup and tourtière."
On the Austin Gourmet side of the building, Doug is setting up a hot and cold delicatessen so that there are hot items available every day with a home menu plan largely structured towards seniors. So they can order their entrées weekly. This will be a great boon to seniors who may also be disabled, so that they won't have to cook and plan meals for one or two people on a weekly basis.
With the opening of John Bull British Bakery and Deli, ex-pats and patrons of UK products will not have to travel out of Coquitlam now to find these much sought-after specialty British products.
Austin Gourmet and the John Bull British Bakery and Deli are located at 1046C Austin Avenue in Coquitlam, B.C. For more information, call (604) 939-4110 or check out their catering menu at: www.austingourmet.ca.
