Traditional Scottish Music and Songs
Performed by Oran Nan Car of Seattle
VANCOUVER - Seattle's Scottish band, Oran nan Car is reported to be excited to perform at Vancouver's Scottish Cultural Centre at 8 PM on February 3 as the featured artists for the Vancouver Gaelic Society's February Ceilidh.
Many of the Scottish Gaelic language and traditions Oran nan Car embrace have been learned from members of the Vancouver Gaelic Society, so the band is truly honoured by the invitation from their mentors.
Oran nan Car (OH-run nun CAR) is a vocal and instrumental band that performs the traditional music and songs of Scotland. The band differs from most other Celtic groups in North America by singing the majority of their music in the Scottish Gaelic language, an ancient language still spoken today in the Outer Hebrides and Western Highlands of Scotland.
Oran nan Car means "cantata" in Gaelic or "songs of the car" when an accent mark is added to the "a" in car, quite an appropriate name for a group that began as a foursome singing while they carpooled to Seirm rehearsals, Slighe nan Gaidheal's Gaelic choir in Seattle.
Based in the Seattle area, Oran nan Car's seven members combine rich vocal harmonies with a variety of instruments, including bagpipes, penny whistle, fiddle, guitar, bodhran, concertina and piano.
The group performs regularly at various Scottish and community events, benefit concerts and has performed on several radio shows in the Seattle area.
Oran nan Car has won first place awards in the quartet and folk group categories at Mòd Vancouver, an international Gaelic song competition held in Vancouver, B.C. As time and funding allow, Oran nan Car hopes to one day compete at the Royal National Mòd held in Scotland.
