Next Stop Aberdeen, Scotland for Local Young Musicians
VANCOUVER - One of the featured performers at this year’s CelticFest official ceremonies on March 19 will be the North Shore Celtic Ensemble. They also have performances March 12 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Maple Ridge; March 17 at the Silver Harbour Centre in North Vancouver; and March 18 at Lonsdale Quay in North Vancouver. They will also be performing for the Rogue Folk Club at the end of April.
The North Shore Celtic Ensemble is a group of young musicians playing traditional and new Celtic music under the direction of Claude Giguere and Jay Knutson. With their sister group, the Coquitlam Ensemble, they perform frequently in North Vancouver and around the Lower Mainland, including an annual concert at the Centennial Theatre.
One of the highlights of the year for the North Shore Celtic Ensemble will be their upcoming trip to Aberdeen, Scotland, to participate in the Aberdeen International Youth Festival which takes place from August 2 to 12.
The group recently announced that they have been selected to participate in the World Festival of Youth Arts, held annually in Aberdeen, Scotland. During this is 10-day event young musicians, dancers, and other performers will have an opportunity to participate in workshops and jam sessions, and meet others from around the world.
The International Youth Festival has been held in Aberdeen since 1979 and is one of the major arts events of the summer in Britain. It is an honour for the North Shore Celtic Ensemble to have been invited. For more information about the festival, visit: www.aiyf.org.
The North Shore Celtic Ensemble Society, a non -profit organization and, as such, they will be hosting various fund-raising events to help with the cost of sending the young musicians to Scotland.
“As Vancouver prepares to host the 2010 Olympics, the North Shore Celtic Ensemble is doing its part to spread British Columbian talent abroad,” says Kim Aippersbach, vice-president of the North Shore Celtic Ensemble Society. “The young members of the Ensemble look forward to the support of the North Shore community as we send the Ensemble to Scotland.”
