By CATHOLINE BUTLER

The Best of British Cookery Book is a collection of traditional recipes from England, Ireland and Wales, compiled by Juliet Sullivan. Born in Brighton, England, Juliet moved to Vancouver with her family three years ago.

JULIET SULLIVAN

It was while trying to think of an original present for her father-in-law that she began researching the recipes in this book. She wanted to surprise him on his birthday with a cookbook with all the good old U.K. favorites that he loved such as steak and kidney pie, toad in the hole, bakewell tart and sherry trifle, to name a few.

But when Juliet began contacting friends in England and receiving tons of recipes, she realized the job had became bigger than she had imagined. “I realized then, that this was a project,” she said, “this wasn’t just something that I could do as a present. There was a lot of time and effort going into this. It had not been done before and I saw a future in putting together a basic cookbook of British cookery.”

Juliet gave her father-in-law a gift of this basic cookbook for his 70th birthday and he was absolutely thrilled. She said “he started showing it around to all the British people he knew, and of course they all wanted one.” It was then that she decided to polish the book up and get it printed. She said, “the next thing, it was selling like hot cakes.”

Juliet has always enjoyed delicious traditional British dishes since her mother and grandmother are both great cooks. She now notes with great pride that as a result of her cookbook she too can now make great gravy without relying on bisto.

The Best of British Cookery Book is compiled in sections with soups and snacks; great British dinners; stuffings and sauces; gravies and accompaniments; pastries and puddings and cakes and bakes.
