SINCERE SYMPATHY
  • To Pat and Arlene Wallace, longtime active members of Seattle’s Irish community, on the death in a motorcycle accident on April 28 of their son Patrick Wallace, aged 44, leaving behind a wife Theresa and children Chanel and Chase.
  • To the family of Pat Molloy who died suddenly April 19 following an accident at his home in Olympia. Born and raised on a farm in Galway, Pat, 67, came to America in 1972 and worked at the Atlas Foundry, Boeing and most recently the Washington State Senate. He regularly attended Seattle’s weekly GAA telecasts, especially if Galway was playing.
  • To the family of Mary O'Malley who died recently aged 80 in Belfast. With her husband Dr. Pearse O'Malley, Mary founded the Lyric Players Theatre in Belfast. Her son, Dr. Kieran O’Malley, founded the Wild Geese Players in Seattle. Kieran was in the process of moving back to Belfast from Seattle when his mother died suddenly.
  • To Mary MacLean of FX McRory's in Seattle whose mom recently passed away in Burlington.
  • To the Seattle relatives of Tommy Heffernan who passed away in Avoca, County Wicklow, Ireland, after being diagnosed with liver cancer last November. Tommy was 52 years old and had been to Seattle many times over the years.
  • To the relatives of Patricia “Pat” King, age 80, who died April 17 in Federal Way. Pat was born in Limerick in 1925 and had lived in the Seattle area since 1958.
  • To the family of Anna “Nana” Gavigan, 76, a native of Ardara, County Donegal, who died recently in Tacoma after a long illness.
  • To the family of Roger Dixon, 83, who died recently in Seattle, and especially to his widow Lois who lost her husband of 55 years.

CAMOGIE, HURLING & FOOTBALL

Efforts are underway in Seattle to start up camogie, a game similar to hurling but played by women. Anyone interested should contact Adeelia at (206) 226-1776. Seattle Gaels’ weekly hurling and Gaelic football practices are underway, and they still need more new players, both men and women. A field day with hurling and football games, including the start of a 7-a-side men’s Gaelic football tournament, is being held on May 20. SEATTLE BECKETT CELEBRATION

Samuel Beckett was born in Foxrock, County Dublin, on April 13th, 1906, and died in Paris in 1989. He shot to fame in the 1950s with his renowned play Waiting for Godot and won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1969. To mark the 100th anniversary of his birth, Outsider's Inn Collective present Celebrating Samuel Beckett on May 31, 6 PM, at Seattle’s Elliott Bay Books, 101 S. Main Street. This will be a staged reading as part of a national observance of Beckett’s works. For information, visit www.outsiders-inn.com.

EXTREME CHAMPION

On April 8, Bellingham novelist and Limerickman Michael Collins led home a record 54-person international field to win the 2006 North Pole Marathon. The certified 26.2-mile event took place at a temporary Russian North Pole camp in the high Arctic Ocean at the Geographic North Pole, in temperatures that dipped to -23C.

Collins won by a 30 minute margin, finishing in 4 hours, 28 minutes. After winning the Sahara half-marathon in February, Collins was selected to represent Ireland at the 100 kilometer European Championships in Brussels in June. PRESIDENTIAL VISITS

Irish President Mary McAleese will visit Butte and Missoula, Montana. This is being billed as the first visit of an Irish President to Montana since 1919 when Eamon de Valera visited on his U.S. tour to raise money during the Irish War of Independence. In 2005, about 20 people traveled from Butte to Seattle for President McAleese’s visit here.

LAW FELLOWS

Nicola White from County Laois, a 24-year-old graduate of the University of Limerick and of Dublin’s Trinity College, is the 2006 Thomas Addis Emmet Fellow of International Law who will spend two months in Seattle this summer working on public service law projects.

At the same time, five UW students will travel to Ireland as William Sampson Fellows of International Law to work on free legal aid projects in Ireland. The students going to Ireland are: Elisabeth Ahlquist and Jill Monnin to Galway; Cecilia Boudreau and Rebecca Huffman to Dublin, and Patrice Kent to Belfast.

The Law Fellowship programs annually bring one or more Irish law students to Seattle and send one or more UW law students to Ireland. The Irish Heritage Club, the Friends of St. Patrick and the Seattle Galway Association support the program which is sponsored by the UW Law School.

NEW PUBS

The Wilde Rover is a new Irish Pub that has opened in Kirkland at 111 Central Way, telephone (425) 822-8940, taking over the space previously occupied by the Kirkland Roaster and Alehouse. Another new Irish Pub, O’Donnell’s American Grill and Irish Pub, will open in late June at 122 128th St SE, just off I-5 at the 128th Street Exit in south Everett.
