Memories of the Famine Still No Joke to the Irish
Dear Editor:
I would like to put a message out to the readers of The Celtic Connection to contact the Comedy Network (Channel 57) regarding a show on the History Bites Series called When Irish Eyes Are Starvin' that was aired on May 28 at 11:30 AM.
I was shocked to see a show in such poor taste and I'm absolutely certain that a similar show on the Holocaust, Rawanda or Darfur would not have been made. In a lousy attempt to put a current affairs satirical take on the Irish Famine, it completely ridiculed the pain and suffering caused by the Famine and was an insult to Irish heritage and Irish people everywhere.
We Irish pride ourselves on our great sense of humour, but extreme tragedies such as this are not the material for comedy. I ask people to send a strong message to the people responsible for this fiasco showing them that it's not at all acceptable to take cheap shots of this episode of Irish history and expect to get away with it.
The contact info is as follows: The channel that aired the show, mail@thecomedynetwork.ca. The name of the series, mail@historybites.com. The name of the production company that made the show When Irish Eyes Are Starvin', mail@ssp.ca.
Regards,
Tom O'Sullivan
