Was the Rising Necessary to Smash “Glass Ceiling” of Catholicism?
Dear Editor:
I, being of Irish descent (through the Lees of Belfast) glance into your fine publication from time to time and I did so this month which included the story on the celebration of the 1916 Rising.
Sadly, it called to mind the April 15 edition of the Spectator’s book review section, wherein it is said that the President of the Republic, Mary McAleese, claimed in a speech in Cork that the Rising was necessary in order to smash “the glass ceiling” of Catholicism.
In my view the Catholic Church had little relevance in the 1916 Rising and this sounds like more feminist anti-clericalism. This woman is fast becoming the quintessential shameless daughter of Ireland.
I can only hope that Father Mallin treated Ms. McAleese with the contempt she is due.
Sincerely,
Larry Bennett
