Millennium Ground Has Made Cardiff a Winner
CARDIFF - An MP has described how the location of Wales’s national stadium had helped Cardiff’s regeneration.
Jenny Willott, Liberal Democrat MP for Cardiff Central, said the Welsh capital has “clearly benefited” from having the Millennium Stadium located in the heart of the city centre. “We have seen a huge increase in the number of people visiting both Cardiff and south Wales.
“We have also benefitted from supporters spending their money as they enjoy a day out and it has encouraged new visitors to come to Wales, for both sporting and musical events.”
The 72,000-seat Millennium Stadium was built on the site of the old Cardiff Arms Park. The arena is bounded on one side by the river Taff and on the other by Cardiff city centre. And despite the urban location the venue has been a runaway success.
“The city centre site has been a real attraction and has made it easier for people to come to the stadium,” Willot said. Businesses had benefitted from increased spending on match days and from Cardiff’s increased profile as a cultural and sporting centre,” she said.
The Welsh Tourist Board has estimated that a sell-out weekend game at the Millennium Stadium is worth around £14 million to the Cardiff economy.
