New Consul General of Ireland Takes Up Her Post in San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO - The Department of Foreign Affairs for Ireland has announced the appointment of Émer Deane as Consul General of Ireland to the Western United States with effect from September 2005.

For the four years immediately prior to this appointment, she served as the Department of Foreign Affairs Personnel Officer. This position involves responsibility for the core management function for the Department’s 1,300 staff.

She was educated at Coláste Ísagán in Dublin, at University College Dublin and at Trinity College Dublin. On joining the Department of Foreign Affairs 10 years ago, she worked on European Union matters as a member of a team coordinating Ireland’s then Presidency of the EU including managing the relationship between Ireland and the Institutions of the EU: the Council, the Commission and the Parliament.

For three years between 1998 and 2001, Émer was the Irish Community Officer at the Irish Embassy in London. She has also served in the Political Division of the Department of Foreign Affairs, dealing with North America amongst other issues.

Her partner, David Owens, is a career civil servant and has most recently served in the Budget and Economic area of Ireland’s Finance Ministry. They have a son Lughán (aged 14) and a daughter, Aodamar (aged six).
