Make Note of Annual Hemochromatosis Week
Your Life May Depend on It!

All Celtic readers should make note that May 25 to 31 is the annual National Hemochromatosis Awareness Week promoted by the Canadian Hemochromatosis Society.

Hemochromatosis is a hereditary condition and it is the number one genetic disorder in Canada and people of Celtic origin have the highest incidence of the defective gene in the world. This mutated gene causes the body to absorb too much iron, leading to a whole range of medical problems. For more information, consult your family physician, or visit: www.cdnhemochromatosis.ca.

In the United States, the American Hemochromatosis Society has a toll free hotline (U.S. only): 1-888-655-IRON and their website is at: www.americanhs.org. For information on genetic testing for HHC, go to: www.genetichealth.com/Hemochromatosis_Home.shtml.

[In the November 2004 issue of The Celtic Connection, Maureen Keane, author of the Sláinte - To Your Good Health column, wrote an in-depth article on the condition called Hemochromatosis. To review her article, CLICK HERE.
