CEOL AGUS CRAIC : Plenty of Great Celtic Tunes to Look Forward to In 2006!

Ceol binn a bhaint as an saol! It's been a grand year for music in Vancouver and 2006 looks to be even better. Raise a glass this holiday season to the musicians in the crowd, who restore our weary souls with sweet music.

Vancouver fiddler Paul Gitlitz launches his new CD To Have & To Hold December 10 at St. James Hall with Cam Wilson, Karla Mundy, Cameron Stewart, Carole Berger, Rich Sobel, and Andy Hillhouse in his band.........On December 11 the Wolf & Hound is the only place to be. The Fourth Annual Danny Burns Memorial “Feed the Hungry” benefit kicks off at 5 PM and features an array of fine local talent raising money for a good cause in memory of a good friend.........On January 6 there's a Contra Dance with Celtic and Quebecois fiddle music from The Sybarites.......January 20 Canadian fiddle and step-dancing champion April Verch and her band roar into St. James.......Scots fiddler Alasdair Fraser and cellist Natalie Haas play a long-awaited Vancouver date February 2 at St. James........The powerhouse of an Irish band that is Lúnasa hit St. James February 10.......The McDades play as part of the Festival du Bois on March 2.......The rest of the lineup for Festival du Bois, which runs from February 25 to March 6, includes Le Rêve du Diable, Le Trio á Quatre, Gitans de Sarajevo, Kleztory, Enter the Haggis, John Arcand, Edouard Richard and Oliver Schroer & Twisted String....... March 7 is the double bill of the year with Karan Casey Band and Flook.........Irish/Scots duo Pipeline make their Vancouver debut on March 11........Lots of exciting plans in the offing for the Vancouver Celtic Festival in 2006 including an extravaganza at the Commodore on Paddy's night featuring The Paperboys.

The next Irish célí dance is January 21 at the Victoria Drive Community Hall with live music from Martingale. They teach all the steps and call all the dances, with no partner needed and kids always welcome. Details: vcn.bc.ca/ceili.........The next Scottish ceilidh dance is January 6 at the Scottish Cultural Centre. Lesson 7 PM, dance 8 PM, with all dances taught and called. Hands Across the Water, an all-star benefit album for the children of the Tsunami is out now on the Compass label.......Kevin Burke and Ged Foley of Patrick Street have recorded an album as a duo on Green Linnet called In Tandem.......Christy Moore has released a new disc called Traveller and is currently doing a series of sold-out gigs in Dublin.
