Celebrating 25 Years of Welsh Song in Vancouver
VANCOUVER - The Vancouver Welsh Men’s Choir (VWMC) celebrated its silver jubilee in 2005 and some of the highlights of the first 25 years include the following:
1980: Debut at the National Gymanfa Ganu in Vancouver;
1988: Tour of New Zealand and Australia;
1991: "Return Home" tour of England and Wales;
1993: First major tour of the United States;
1995: First continental European tour;
2000: Tour of England, Wales and appearance at the Millennium Celebration at the Royal Albert Hall;
2003: Guests of the Russian Ministry of Culture in St. Petersburg and Moscow to celebrate the 300th anniversary of St. Petersburg;
2005: Silver Jubilee concert in Vancouver;
2006: Silver Jubilee tour with concerts in Boston, Halifax, Charlottetown, Miramichi Folk Festival and Cape Breton Islands.
Over this Christmas period, the VWMC will present a series of concerts in the Lower Mainland. "A Christmas Carol" will be presented in Abbotsford on December 11 at 2 PM at the Abbey Arts Centre, 2329 Crescent Way; in Surrey on December 12 at 8 PM at the Surrey Arts Centre, 13750 88th Avenue (this show is sold out); in New Westminster on December 16 at 8 PM at the Queens Avenue United Church, 529 Queens Avenue; December 17 at 8 PM at the Shaughnessy Heights United Church, 1550 West 33rd Avenue.
Next year, the VWMC will present “For the Joy of Singing” on January 22 at 2 PM in North Vancouver at the Lions Gate Hospital Foundation Benefit Concert, Centennial Theatre, 2300 Lonsdale; A Celtic Celebration (with Winter Harp) in Surrey on February 25 at 8 PM at the Fleetwood Christian Reformed Church, 9165 - 160 Street; A Farewell Concert in Vancouver on May 26 at 8 PM at the Ryerson United Church, 2195 West 45 Avenue; and at the Peace Arch Hospital Benefit Concert in Surrey on May 27 at 8 PM at the Church of the Good Shepherd, 2250 - 150 Street.
