CEOL AGUS CRAIC: Great Concerts for the Fall

Ceol binn a bhaint as an saol! It’s hard to accept that the rainy season has come down upon us already. At least there are plenty of dances, sessions and concerts to warm the rain-sodden soul.

Concert listings:

There's a CD launch for the latest release from local band The Tiller's Folly on October 21 at St. James Hall.........Award-winning Scottish-Canadian singer David Francey plays Capilano College on October 23.........Scotland’s Tannahill Weavers hit St. James on November 4.........The Battlefield Band, featuring Irish singer Pat Kilbride make their first Vancouver appearance in almost a decade November 24 at St. James.........Local faves The Paperboys do a two-night stand at the WISE Hall November 25-26..........Cape Breton youngsters The Cottars are back at St. James December 2.......... On December 10 Victoria's The Bills come to St. James.........Northern Irish group Craobh Rua are due to make a long-awaited return in January.........Scots fiddler Alasdair Fraser and cellist Natalie Haas are slated for February 2.........The do-not-miss concert of 2006 is on March 8 with a double bill of Karan Casey and Flook.........Irish/ Scots duo Pipeline make their Vancouver debut on March 11.

Local motion:

The first Irish célí dance runs October 16 at the Victoria Drive Community Hall with live music by Gaoler's Mews......... All steps are taught and dances called, with no partner needed and kids welcome. Details: vcn.bc.ca/ceili.........The next Scottish ceilidh dance is October 28 at the Scottish Cultural Centre. Lesson 7 PM, dance 8 PM, with all dances taught and called. Info: (604) 436-3193.........The Scottish Cultural Centre is also the venue for Scottish Country Dance classes for all levels on Monday nights from 7:30-9:30 PM. The great Newfoundland duo Christina Smith & Jean Hewson have a new disc out on the Borealis label called August Gale.........Also just out on Borealis is the latest from Cape Breton Gaelic singer Mary Jane Lamond: Stor.........Another Cape Breton release in All At Once by the Barra MacNeils.........An e-mail just in from the terrific band Flook says their third album Haven is just finished and about to be released.........The Tiller’s Folly’s new disc is called Buchan Bluegrass.
