CEOL AGUS CRAIC: Joy and Sorrow in the Music Scene

Ceol binn a bhaint as an saol! Though it was a fine summer for music and all the joy it brings, there was sorrow as well. The Vancouver music community lost one of its own July 15 when drummer Paul Lawton was killed in a work accident. “Lolly” was a fine musician and a totally standup guy. He is much missed.

The great local group Cleia play a farewell gig on Sept 9 at St. James Hall. Band member Norah Rendell is off to Limerick for a year to get her Masters in Irish Music. One of her other bands, The Meanads, will open the show.........show by Cape Breton fiddler Ashley MacIsaac slated for September 18 at Capilano College has been cancelled due to illness.........French guitarist Pierre Bensusan makes music that crosses many stylistic and international boundaries on September 30 at Cap College.........Scottish favourites The Proclaimers play an early show at Richard's on Richards October 1 with special guests The Clumsy Lovers.........The farewell tour by stellar Irish band Danú makes a stop at Cap College on October 7.........Scottish/Australian singer/songwriter Eric Bogle makes a rare appearance at Cap College on October 8.........There's a CD launch for The Tiller's Folly October 21 at St. James.........Scotland’s Tannahill Weavers hit St. James on November 4.........The Battlefield Band make their first appearance here in over 10 years on November 24 at St. James...........Local party band The Paperboys do two nights at the WISE Hall November 25-26........Cape Breton's teenage Celtic stars The Cottars are back December 2 at St. James......Watch for Northern Irish act Craobh Rua in January.........Scots fiddler Alasdair Fraser with cellist Natalie Haas are here on February 2.........There’s a killer double-bill on March 8 with Karan Casey and Flook.........Irish/ Scots duo Pipeline make their debut here on March 11.
Local motion
The first Irish ceili of the fall season is October 15 at the Victoria Drive Community Centre.........Kick off the ceilidh season with the first Scottish Ceilidh Dance on September 30 at the Scottish Cultural Centre. Lesson 7 PM, dance 8-11 PM, with all dances taught and called, featuring live music and refreshments. Info: (604) 436-3193.........Starting September 12, the Scottish Cultural Centre is also the venue for Scottish Country Dance classes on Monday nights offered for all levels. 7:30-9:30 PM. Former Solas guitarist John Doyle has a new solo album out on the Compass label entitled Wayward Son.........Next month Compass will release a much-anticipated collaboration between Doyle and Irish-American fiddle ace Liz Carroll called In Play.........Also coming in October is The Girl Who Couldn’t Fly from the great Yorkshire singer Kate Rusby.........Irish singer Karan Casey’s latest is Chasing The Sun. Casey and her band were a highlight of the summer festival season.
