VANCOUVER - On August 29 the Rogue Folk Club held a reception at the Wolf and Hound to publicize their upcoming fall concert program and to announce the release of a new CD by local roots band Cleia.

This gathering was a first in the 18-year history of the Rogue and it was also the first time I had ever heard of an event that was both a farewell party and a CD launch for the same group.
The lineup for Cleia includes Andy Hillhouse, Norah Rendell, Karla Mundy, Neil Hammond and Keona Mundy.
When Norah, the group’s singer and whistle player, learned that she had been accepted at the University of Limerick to study the Irish flute, to the group decided to record their material just for posterity’s sake. Turned out the four hour session, recorded live off the floor, was good, so they decided to release it.

LOCAL CELTIC GROUP CLEIA: (L-R) Keona Mundy, Norah Rendell, Karla Mundy, Andy Hillhouse and Neil Hammond.

Norah, who has Scottish roots, is understandably excited about the prospect of studying in Ireland thanks to a Canada Council grant. She said, “I will be heading off September 20, to do a year-long MA in traditional Irish music. I will be studying the flute but also playing a little bit of fiddle since I have to play a second instrument.”
Steve Edge of the Rogue Folk Club has consistently booked great Celtic acts into the WISE hall and other venues for the past 18 years. He supports and encourages local Celtic groups and hosts a radio show every Saturday morning on CITR FM 101.9 called The Edge On Folk. He is also a musician....you might say Steve is steeped in Celtic music.

THE FRIENDLY STAFF at The Wolf and Hound (L-R) Hannah O’Connell (Cork) and Lara Babalola with owner Jacquie Metzler.
|
Margaret Whale, Steve’s companion of many years, quietly and efficiently worked in the background putting out hors d’oeuvres and making sure everything was ready. Music was provided by Cleia who played while guests munched on Margaret’s tasty hors d’oeuvres.
The Wolf and Hound has an area in the back of the restaurant which is quite cosy for private groups and ideal for a CD release launch party. Jacquie Metzler, the friendly owner of the Wolf and Hound is always on the job, day or night, and along with her staff Jacquie offers one of the friendliest welcomes in town.

ATTENDING THE ROGUE FOLK CLUB Media Launch and Cleia CD release party at the Wolf and Hound are Erin Mullan (writer of the Celtic Connection’s Ceol Agus Craic column and host of In The Claddagh Ring radio show) and Lisa Redckop.

There is always a bit of ‘the craic’ going on, especially if your server is Cork-born, Hannah. She always says, “think of bananas and you won’t forget my name.” Hannah is never stuck for a turn of Irish phrase.
All in all, it was a very enjoyable evening and it was an opportunity to meet up with some members of the Celtic community that I hadn’t seen for some time and that’s always a pleasant experience.
