SFU Pipe Band Presents a Celtic Concert Series at SFU

VANCOUVER - Thus year is the 40th anniversary of Simon Fraser University, and the world-beating pipe band that carries its name has decided to do something very special to mark the anniversary.

For the last 25 years, the SFU Pipe Band has carried the university colours to competitions and concert halls around the world, with notable success. The four-time World Pipe Band Champions have won many awards and accolades, and have played and recorded in some of the best concert halls in the world.

SFU was the first pipe band to play a full concert and record a CD at New York’s esteemed Carnegie Hall, and the band followed this with a CD from the Sydney Opera House in Australia! Since that CD, the band has given major concerts in Belfast, Glasgow, Halifax, Toronto and other centres.

With all that traveling, and all those successes, the band decided to take this summer to honour the University that has so profoundly affected the band’s success over the years. “We owe so much to the fantastic, long-term support of Simon Fraser University,” says Pipe Major Terry Lee. “We could not have achieved such success have without the backing of such a tremendous institution.”

The band will be presenting three live concerts in the Theatre at SFU on June 30, July 1 and July 2, and they will be recorded and produced into two CDs called On Home Ground. After all the traveling, the band is very pleased to be playing on Burnaby Mountain for its closest supporters and fans.

"We're really excited to play these concerts at home,” says Lee. “We have prepared a great new program – this is no ordinary pipes and drums show. We have a full range on Celtic instrumentation – pipes, drums, smallpipes, fiddles, keyboards, guitar, whistles, world percussion – this is a show that we are very proud to present on home ground.”

The band will be pulling out all the stops for these concerts, and has a unique presentation for each night of the series. From traditional airs to Pachelbel’s Canon, the band will be showcasing not only its ability as a pipe band, but also the varied musical abilities and tastes of its members and special guests.

The CD will be released in North America at the Pacific Northwest Highland Games in July, and at the Glasgow International Festival of Piping in Glasgow in August. Special autographed copies are available for pre-sale through the SFU Pipe Band web site.
