CEOL AGUS CRAIC: Eighteenth Birthday Bash for Rogue Folk Club

Ceol binn a bhaint as an saol! The fine folks at the Rogue Folk Club have plenty of cause for celebration at the minute. The club has its 18th birthday bash this month and chief Rogue Steve Edge hosts his 20-year anniversary radio show in June. The celebrations provide an excellent opportunity to say a hearty and raucous thank you to the Rogue crowd for bringing so much great music to town for so many years. Here’s to plenty more!

..........The Rogue Folk Club marks its 18th birthday on May 14 with a show by genre-bending quartet Freshet with local fave The Amy Stephen Band at St. James Hall ..........Blackthorn will be providing the tunes for the Hyack Festival’s fifth annual Scottish ceilidh dance on May 27 at the Arenex in Queen’s Park, New Westminister. Details: (604) 522-6894 ..........The Edge On Folk radio show on CITR celebrates its 20th anniversary with a party at St. James on June 3 featuring fine local fiddler Shona Le Mottée, who launches her solo CD the same night. Singer Corinne West is the opener..........On June 30 The Chango Family from Quebec play St. James..........The Vancouver Folk Music Festival (July 15-17) has Le Vent du Nord, Karan Casey, David Francey and loads more..........The Mission festival (July 23-25) lineup includes Eileen Ivers & Immigrant Soul and The McGarrigles.......Capercaillie will be playing Festival Vancouver on August 11..........Watch this space next month for a full summer festival roundup......A Vancouver date for Shooglenifty in August is still to be confirmed..........Cape Breton fiddler Ashley MacIsaac kicks off the next Folk & Roots concert series at Calilano College in September.....Irish group Danú will return to town for a not-to-be-missed gig on October 7 also at Cap College......Scottish/Australian singer Eric Bogle plays Cap College on October 8.......Scotland’s Tannahill Weavers return on November 4.....Cape Breton group The Cottars will be here in early December..........In January 2006 sees a long-awaited Vancouver date for Alasdair Fraser & Natalie Haas.

Local Motion

The last Scottish ceilidh dance of the season is the Blackthorn Ceilidh Dance at the Hyack Festival on May 27 listed above..........Both the Irish and Scottish monthly dances start up again in September..........There's Scottish Country Dancing in the Park on Monday nights from June 13 to August 15, 7:30-9:30 PM, (weather permitting) at Stanley Park's Ceperley Playground. Come to watch or join in. Info: (604) 984-6998........The Wolf and Hound has traditional sessions on Monday and Wednesday nights. For information about the next traditional French-Canadian session call (604) 929-4686......The Irish Heather hosts an Irish traditional session on Thursday nights.

Scotland’s Old Blind Dogs have a new live album out this month on Green Linnet Records called Play Live......Irish accordion wiz Sharon Shannon is joined by the likes of Frankie Gavin, Michael McGoldrick and Jim Murray on a superb release of Irish trad on the Compass label simply called Tunes......Also in from Compass: Quebec’s Rosheen get a wider audience with Musique Celtique and Scotland’s Aly Bain & Phil Cunningham do up a fine double disc: The Best of Aly & Phil.
