THREE ROW BARLEY
Overserved
To the delight of their many fans, Three Row Barley released their first CD entitled Overserved just in time for St. Patrick’s celebrations.
Roger Buston is the group leader and main vocalist of this high-energy group. He has enough energy and personality to fill a room all on his own and that takes nothing away from the rest of the band.
Many will remember The Quenchers, a hugely popular local Celtic-rock band that Roger put together over a decade ago. The group disbanded in 1998. Three Row Barley came together in early 2000, born out of sessions at the now defunct Boar’s Head in North Vancouver.
The band has been a going concern ever since, playing at all the well-known establishments in and around Vancouver. Recently, Three Row Barley was part of the entertainment line-up at a Celtic Showcase held at Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver on March 17. This sold-out event was the wind-up for the highly successful CelticFest.
Buston is a prolific writer who took a break between The Quenchers and the start-up of Three Row Barley, which he describes as, “a cathartic creative period,” in which he composed over 30 songs, numerous poems and ultimately a novel still awaiting publication.”
Band members are: Roger Buston on vocals and guitar; Bruce Mathisen on vocals and guitar; Brian Taylor on vocals and bodhran; Chris Williscroft on bass and mandolin. Supporting musicians: Avery Yackel on fiddle; Jenny Bice on fiddle; Mary Brunner on fiddle; and Steve Bohnen on guitar.
Tracks on the CD are: Say You’ll Come Here To Me (Roger Buston), Widow’s Walk (Brian Taylor), Banks of Sicily (arranged by Bruce Mathisen), Jiggin’ the Cod Medley, Full Measure (Roger Buston), King George (arranged by Avery Yackel), Dooley’s Farm (Roger Buston), Will Ye No Come Back Again?, Saturday On The Strand with I’se the B’ye’ (Roger Buston) and Barrett’s Privateers.
Saturday On The Strand is a very upbeat piece of music in which Roger has included the names of several well-known personalities in the community, including yours truly. Roger is a great admirer of the late Stan Rogers and no evening with Three Row Barley would be complete without Barrett’s Privateers. Overserved, is a great credit to Three Row Barley.

ALTAN
Local Ground
March was a very popular month for Celtic groups to release new CDs. Altan released their latest offering entitled Local Ground in early March on the Virgin Music label. This recording is now available at all fine record stores.
The Donegal-based traditional super group have been touring worldwide for the past 20 years and have a quarter million units sold. Their musical friendships were forged and proven in innumerable kitchen and pub sessions in Ireland. Their live shows continue to convey a vivacious dynamism that is firmly rooted in a pride and respect for a tradition they love and are proud to represent. This respect for their own roots is reflected in the title and content of their new album.
Local Ground is a refreshing and beautiful album with traditional reels and rich Gaelic songs brought to life by the group’s dynamic twin fiddles, accordion, guitar, bouzouki and by Maihread Ni Mhaonaigh’s transfixing voice. Maihread cites her father Francie (himself a Donegal fiddler) as being her inspiration.
Band leader, fiddle player and singer, Mairead and her husband Dermot Byren, accordionist for Altan, own a pub in Teelin in Donegal. Teelin has a rich heritage of musicians, singers and storytellers.
Their pub is called the Cuil a Duin (pronounced Cool a Doon, literally meaning “The Back of the Fort”). It is a warm and inviting place for musicians to meet and for people to sing and dance. Informal sessions are the lifeblood of Irish music and where better to have them than in a pub owned by the very musicians who love to play music and sing. It is back to these sessions that Altan returns for relaxation and musical inspiration.
Members of the band are: Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh on fiddle and vocals; Ciaran Tourish on fiddle, whistle and vocals; Mark Kelly on guitar, bouzouki and vocals; Ciaran Curran on bouzouki and mandolin; Dermot Byrne on accordion; and Daithi Sproule on guitar and vocals. There are 13 tracks on this CD and every one is a gem.
Altan are so far ahead on the road of traditional Irish music that they would meet many Celtic groups on their way back. If you happen to be visiting Ireland this year and you love traditional Irish music, be sure to stop at the Cuil a Duin Pub in Teelin in County Donegal where you're sure to be treated to some of the best.
