Celtic Music Reviews

By CATHOLINE BUTLER

CELTIC WOMAN

A new CD by this five member female troop has arrived just in time for St. Patrick's Day - it was released on March 1.

How to describe the voice and music of these five extremely talented Celtic women? I suppose the closest would be the sounds of Enya. It's a wonderfully soothing sound with voices that seem to float on mists of gossamer wings. Haunting voices that awaken the ancient deep within our psyche. Alone or united their voices stay with you, capturing the essence of traditional and contemporary Irish music.

The five Irish women artists are: Mairead on fiddle; Chloe on vocals; Lisa on vocals; Meav on vocals; Orla on harp and vocals. Tracks on Celtic Woman are: Last Rose of Summer/Walking in the Air; May It Be; Isle of Inisfree; Danny Boy; One World; Ave Maria; Send Me A Song; Siuil A Run (Walk My Love); Orinoco Flow; Someday; She Moved Thru the Fair; Nella Fantasia; The Butterfly; Harry's Game; The Soft Goodbye; and bonus tracks: The Ashoken Farewell/The Contradiction and Si Do Mhaimeo.

Celtic Woman is an absolute gem and available at fine record stores everywhere

AFTER THE BATTLE
The Wheat In The Barley

The popular "Folk n'roll" local group The Wheat In The Barley have just released their third CD entitled After The Battle. To celebrate the release and just generally let off steam, they will kick off St. Patrick's week with a concert at 8 PM on March 11 at the St. James Community Square, 3214 West 10th Avenue, Vancouver. This should be a great hooley!

The Wheat In The Barley have a unique Celtic-Slavic, sometimes Quebec and at other times Newfoundland sound to their music, which makes for great dancing and listening. They have an interesting spin on some of the traditional music...try to keep your feet still when they're playing!

Members of The Wheat In The Barley are Steve Gidora who founded the group in 1995; Mark Dowding; Victor Smith; Nicole Scoffield; Mickey Hovan; and Ed Johnston. Tracks on After The Battle are: Hyper Ska Hopak; After the Battle of Aughrim/Hobart's Transformation; I'se the B'y; Waiting for You; Hersonsky Hopak/Hutsui; Shady Grove; La Partida; Farewell to Ireland; What We Came Here For; Sea Saw; Father O'Flynn/Morrison's Jig; There But For Fortune; Frailach and The Growling Old Man and the Growling Old Woman.

Two venues where fans can see this rollicking group playing on St. Patrick's Day are: Stamps Landing Pub in False Creek and Mountain Shadow Pub in Burnaby. For more information and to purchase their CD, visit: www.wheatinthebarley.com.
