North American Convention of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann:
A Great Weekend of Singing, Dancing, and Music
OTTAWA - The North American Convention of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann will be held at the Ottawa Marriott Hotel from March 31 to April 3. This event is a great gathering of North America and Ireland’s finest musicians and dancers along with some of the finest academic minds, learned folklorists, anthropologists, ethnomusicologists, lecturers and researchers.
Some of the presenters include, Dr. Gearóid Ó’hAllmuharáin, MBC, Ph.D., musician, author and historian, who will give a lecture on “Irish Women and Traditional Music.
Marianne O'Gallagher will speak about Grosse Île and the heroic French who risked and often lost their lives in caring for the diseased and dying Irish who were fleeing their famine-ridden country in fever ships.
Padraigh Findley will offer a one-man presentation on the life and times of Thomas D’Arcy McGee with slides and original music and text especially written for this convention.
The event also offers céilí dance lessons, traditional music, along with Irish language and singing workshops.
Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, founded in Ireland in 1951, is an international organization dedicated to the preservation and enjoyment of traditional Irish music, dance, language and culture.
The organization offers a wide variety of activities that include céilís (dances with live traditional music), music sessions, Irish dance workshops, celebrity concerts, music lessons and Irish language classes.
Ottawa Branch was founded in 1975 and is one of the largest branches in North America.
