MOVING ON
More Irish Stew for the Loveless

Writer Brendan Gillen's third book Moving On: More Irish Stew for the Loveless, completes a trilogy which he has written since the breakup of his marriage. His first two are Losing Mary: Marriage Breakup: A Survivor's Story and Finding Me: Irish Stew for the Loveless.

Into these books Brendan has poured all the pain and loneliness he experienced after the disintegration of his family. He takes the reader with him on his quest for peace of mind and sobriety. We follow him on his journey from the quiet mountain community of Kimberley, B.C., to the wild and woolley downtown east side in Vancouver.

As he staggers from one disaster to the next, often pursued by dangerous and unfriendly characters, Brendan shares his innermost feelings with brutal honesty. More often than not, his interaction with these various individuals is absolutely hilarious and throughout all his trials and tribulations, he never loses his ability to laugh.

A native of County Sligo, Ireland, Brendan came to Canada almost 40 years ago, but he has never lost his Irish identify. His forays over to the Irish house on Trafalgar Street run by Frank Moore will have a familiar ring to many readers.

These books are part of Brendan’s healing process as he struggles to come to terms with his new life. He writes in Moving On, “When Mary came into my life she enriched it, and when she left, a gaping hole remained. But bit by bit, that hole is being filled in. There lies the paradox; truly, “‘tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.

“I was reborn on the soul destroying streets of Vancouver’s downtown east side. Rebirth is never easy. Somehow I found the courage, the strength, and the determination to turn my life around, if not for myself, for my sons.”

He has just celebrated five years of sobriety and Brendan is well and truly moving on and into a new life. He is also working on a new book, which he actually started 15 years ago, called, The Frontier Frolics of a Frantic Fenian: More Irish Trouble Up the North....of Canada.
