Celebrating 75 Years of Bringing the Joy and Spirit of Scottish Heritage to Vancouver

By KEN ROGERSON

VANCOUVER - Marlene Rogerson, the president of the Moray, Nairn and Banff Association, welcomed over 300 members and guests to the Association’s 75th anniversary gala dinner in the Scottish Cultural Centre on October 8.

ORGANIZER Marlene Rogerson with entertainer Rob Stuart.

During the ceremonies, long-time members, Joe Cassidy, Connie Barclay, Isabel Waddell, Ken McCrimmon and Barb McCrimmon (over 30 years), were presented with memorial scrolls.

After an excellent buffet dinner, the gathering was royally entertained by the Delta Police Pipe Band. The highlight of their much-appreciated performance, was the inclusion of their four male regimental Highland dancers. They tip-toed over the crossed swords to the music of the pipes to everyone’s delight.

The inclusion of Wilma and Donald Paton was an inspiration. Totally without accompaniment, in her soft lilting voice, Wilma sang some beautiful Scottish songs to a hushed audience. There was laughter when Donald told a number of his famous funny stories, all in rhyme.

No significant Moray, Nairn and Banff evening would be complete without an appearance by native son Rob Stuart. Rob and the Gala Band led the gathering well into the late evening with some fine music and song.

At the end of the evening, Marlene thanked everyone for attending and the entertainers for their performance. She especially thanked the committee for all their hard work. Bonnie Volker presented Marlene with a bouquet of flowers and thanked her for the hours of work she contributed to making this special evening such a great success.

The Moray, Nairn and Banff Association is one of Vancouver’s most active Scottish Societies. It can be proud of the achievements over 75 years. It all began on October 6, 1930, when Mrs. Margaret Webster welcomed 12 Morayshire men and women to her home for tea and cookies. Let’s hope the Moray, Nairn and Banff Association continues to bring joy and the spirit of the Scottish heritage to this great city and its population for many more years to come.
