Society Recognizes British Contributions to Canadian Heritage

VANCOUVER - The annual general meeting of the Society of St. George of Greater Vancouver was held on September 19. The Society's members are people with British roots from various walks of life who enjoy each other's company and help newcomers settle in B.C. St. George's is an English society but people from all parts of Britain are members.

They believe that important aspects of Canada's heritage which came from England, such as our parliamentary democracy, our common law, our English language, our fundamental freedoms, our economic enterprise, and our Monarchy, are good things and worth celebrating.

They hold a number of social events during the year and volunteer to assist British immigrants to establish themselves. They also link to other British societies throughout Canada and around the world. The Society welcomes new applications and members receive a posted newsletter (called the Dragon Fire), e_mail notices about special events, and other benefits.

Upcoming events include Trafalgar Dinner 2005, an historic event with the Naval Officers' Association at HMCS Discovery, Christmas Brunch, pub nights and wine tasting. Other events not scheduled at the present time but in the planning stages, include: sight seeing boat cruise, spring barbecue and other socials.

A new slate of officers and directors was elected at the AGM, including: Dan Brown, president; Roger Dawson, vice-president; Joan Skipper, secretary; Bruce Bodwell, treasurer; directors-at-large: Dorothy Evers, Len Compton, Steve McVittie, Peter Howard, Joan Skipper, and Maureen Eagle.
