Caber Tossing and Kilts Flying at Canmore Highland Games

CANMORE, Alberta - Western Canada's premiere Highland games take place on September 4 in Canmore, Alberta. Set in the majestic Rocky Mountains and the heart of this downtown community at Centennial Park, what better atmosphere can there be for the sound of the bagpipes.

PIPERS, drummers and dancers from across Canada and parts of the U.S. and Britain will gather to compete at the annual Canmore Highland Games.

This is the 15th Annual Canmore Highland Games presented by the Three Sisters Scottish Festival Society. Year after year, competitors in heavy sports, highland dancing, piping and drumming, come from all across Canada and parts of the United States and Britain.

Whether you are a genuine Scotsman or you just want to celebrate in “the Scottish way,” there will be something to please all members of the family.

The day's events start off at 7:30 AM with a pancake breakfast in the heated festival tent. Throughout the day there will be piping and drumming, highland dancing and heavy sports competitions. At the culmination of the day, the massed bands perform in the centre field of the park at 5 PM. Truly an awesome sight – all of the bands in their finest, the stirring music and the mountains as a backdrop – it may bring a tear to your eyes!

Other favorites during the day are the demonstrations of the sheep dogs doing their sheep herding, Celtic goods for sale at the many retail vendor booths and the non-stop entertainment in the festival tent featuring music by Stratus, Irish dancers, beer gardens and much more. Food (including haggis of course) and beverages are available in the tent and at the main food outlet on the grounds.

And it doesn’t stop there. The Evening Ceilidh, from 6 PM until 11 PM, features The Peelers from Glengarry County, Ontario. If you want to attend this event, come to the Games early in the morning and purchase your Ceilidh tickets; often they are sold out by mid-morning and can only be purchased on games day.
