Get Your Kilt Ready for the Annual BC Highland Games
By MIKE PAUL
VANCOUVER - The 74th annual BC Highland Games will take to the field at the Town Centre Stadium in Coquitlam on June 25, filling the stadium with hundreds of pipers and dancers in competition from as far away as California, Oregon, Washington, Alberta, and from throughout British Columbia.
Heavy athletic types will also take part on the day, featuring the popular caber toss and all the heavy bars and stone competitions.
The stadium will also be a flood of numerous events such as stage shows, entertainment for the kids (bring the whole family), dog and sheep displays, antique cars, clan tents, and vendor tents offering all that is Scottish.
Should you find a craving for some food and refreshments, there will be plenty to serve every palate, but you must try a Scotch meat pie! Plans are also underway to have your favourite frappuchino available courtesy of Starbucks.
For those with an appetite for something stronger, visit the beer garden (open at 11 AM), and, of course, the whisky tasting tent will welcome you for a tasty demonstration (a slight charge for this one).
There will be all sorts of attractions for the kids such as a miniature golf course, face painting, kite flying, clowns, and more.
The stage show in front of the 1,800 seat grandstand will start at 11:30 AM and continue through to 4:30 PM with Scottish and Irish music and dancers. Opening ceremonies will take place on the entertainment stage at Noon.
To complete this great day of Scottish fare, the massed pipe bands will march down the field at approximately 5:30 PM, followed by an impromptu ceilidh near the watering hole.
General admission at the gate with special rates for seniors, students and children. Gates open at 8:30 AM and close at 8 PM. Car and RV parking is free (what a deal!) at the stadium with additional parking nearby along with more parking near the Coquitlam shopping mall with a free shuttle service to and from the stadium.
