Bad Choice for Ad Placement?

Dear Maura,

Let me say how much I enjoyed your brave and beautiful letter in the March 2005 issue. It is certainly brave of you to tackle such a taboo subject such as alcoholism, as it is more myth than fact that the Irish can "hold their own.”

While I personally have not been touched by this terrible disease, my eldest sister was once married to a brilliant lawyer who drank away their marriage. I am proud of you in that you got up on a chair and proclaimed to one and all, how this affliction destroys people, families and careers.

I would however, be amiss, if I forgot to include a note of disappointment. Your letter was on page two and just opposite on page three was an advert that began with the words “Live like a Saint, Party Like A Paddy” and showed St. Peter passing a pint to an outstretched hand. Perhaps it was bad ad placement, but in my mind it took a little off your shining editorial.

I always enjoy your letters, and of course every issue of The Celtic Connection.

Yours,
Edward Mulcahy
