EDMONTON - With strong tournament showings in Montreal and Calgary under their belts, the Edmonton Wolfe Tones women's and men's Gaelic football teams are looking forward to hosting their own annual invitational contest on July 10 and 11.
For the women, every game is a welcome opportunity to fine tune the quick passing and solid support play that Coach Mick O'Toole has been emphasizing all season. With capable goalkeeping, a solid core of backs and midfielders, and what is undoubtedly the strongest forward line in Canada, the 2004 version of the women Wolfe Tones have gelled as a team and are a force to be reckoned with on the pitch.
Meanwhile the Wolfe Tone men will be looking for some revenge after their one goal loss to the perennially tough Calgary Chieftains in the Cowtown tournament final.
With a few more weeks of training under their belts, Wolfe Tones coach and veteran player Christy Whelehan is confident that the clutch play of the club's seasoned veterans, combined with the blinding speed and scoring touch of the forwards will see them finish on top in Alberta's capital.
Along with the Wolfe Tones and the Chieftains, a team from the newly minted football town of Fort McMurray is expected to round out the competition in Edmonton.
The Edmonton Wolfe Tones' tenth annual invitational tournament will run July 10 and 11 at the Airway field/Clansmen Rugby Club at 11060 - 111 Avenue, with Saturday night festivities to be held at the Irish Club.
