Edmonton Wolfe Tones Meet Montreal 2004

By JANET HARVEY

EDMONTON - The Edmonton Wolfe Tones men's and women's Gaelic football teams spent the May long weekend in la belle province competing in the Montreal Shamrock's nineteenth annual nine-a-side tournament. Both teams acquitted themselves admirably as representatives of Gaelic football in Edmonton and western Canada.

The Wolfe Tone women finished the tournament in third place against some strong central Canada competition. The team posted wins against the Montreal and St. Mike's (Toronto) sides, and heartbreaking losses by two points to eventual tournament champions Ottawa, and by four points to runners up Brampton.

The Wolfe Tones men's side were not to be outdone and battled hard in matches against Montreal, Durham, and Ottawa to qualify for the tournament semi-finals. With only nine players and many injuries, the boys put in a gritty performance against St. Mike's but could not hold off the team that went on to win the nine-team tournament.

The tournament experience and the tremendous hospitality of the host teams made the weekend a fantastic kickoff for the Wolfe Tones 2004 season. Hoping to build on this positive beginning, the Wolfe Tones will hit the road again, travelling south to compete in the Calgary Chieftain's annual tournament on June 19 and 20.
