CEOL AGUS CRAIC: Rare Visit by Irish American Fiddle Ace

Ceol binn a bhaint as an saol! Local Irish music fans are lucky enough this autumn. We enjoy the great good fortune to have two of the best acts in Irish music come through town in the next month or so.

Concert listings:

October 9 brings Irish trad supergroup Lúnasa back to Capilano College. Their latest stunner of an album, The Kinnitty Sessions, demonstrates why these lads are one of the finest live bands to be found anywhere.......On November 5 one of the greatest fiddle players in the Irish tradition, Chicago’s Liz Carroll, is joined by Solas guitarist John Doyle for a not-to-be-missed concert at St. James Hall……Ottawa trio Finest Kind play St. James October 16………Garnet Rogers plays Cap College October 24…….Scottish singer Dougie MacLean will be at St. James on November 10......Irish-Canadian singer-songwriter Stephen Fearing is in town November 21………On December 3 local faves The Paperboys play St. James........Scottish fiddle genius Alasdair Fraser and cellist Natalie Haas play December 10…..….Next year, watch for a still to be confirmed Tim O'Brien gig in early January………..Other artists to look out for in 2005 include dates by Afro-Celtic combo Baka Beyond and amazing Scottish guitarist Tony McManus in April, Old Blind Dogs in May, and Danú, for what could be their final appearances in Canada, at festivals in July and on a concert tour in October…….Australian legend Eric Bogle could be here in October 2005 as well.

Local motion:

The first Irish céilí of the fall season is October 16 at the Victoria Drive Community Hall. There’ll be live music from Randy Vic & Friends and kids and newcomers are very welcome. Details: (604) 709-4140.......The next Scottish Ceilidh Dance is on October 29 at the Scottish Cultural Centre. Lesson 7 PM, dance 8-11 pm with refreshments and live music. Info: (604) 436-3193………Also at the cultural centre are weekly Scottish Country Dance classes held on Monday nights, for all ages and skill levels. Info: www.rscdsvancouver.org or (604) 737-7948.......Irish trad sessions at the Irish Heather are Tuesday and Thursday nights.......The Wolf and Hound hosts traditional sessions on Monday and Wednesday nights…..The Wolf and Hound doesn’t just provide a home-away-from-home for our fair berg’s Celtic tunesmiths. On October 3, the popular Vancouver venue hosted a musicians gathering to honour the late organ master Robbie King, a beloved member of the Vancouver blues community. Orchestrated by Lindsay Mitchell of Prism, participants included Gerry Doucette from Loverboy, Tom Lavin of Powder Blues, Will McCaulder, Kenny Wayne, Doc Fingers, Gail Bowen, Hans Staymer, Johnny Ferrira and Chris Nordquist.

Irish accordionist Sharon Shannon has never been one to be afraid to push the musical envelope. She continues her groundbreaking work on the disc Libertango, which features collaborations with singers Sinead O’Connor and the much-missed Kirsty McColl………The extraordinary sound of the late Irish button accordion player Kevin Keegan is now available on a new release. The Music of Kevin Keegan is on the Cló Iar-Chonnachta Records label and distributed by Copperplate Distribution……….Green Linnet Records has a number of Celtic music titles on sale via their website: www.greenlinnet.com/………Wild and wonderful West coasters The Bills have a new disc out, their third, called Let ‘Em Run.
