By CATHOLINE BUTLER

VANCOUVER - Glasgow-born Laura Hasthorpe recently arrived in Vancouver and is busy making plans to open Canada’s first Colourstrings Music training program. Laura is a professional musician and associate teacher, trained at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music.

“I’ve been working with the Scottish Opera Orchestra and various schools in Glasgow,” she said, “and I’m excited about setting up Colourstrings Music Kindergarten and Violin Training in Vancouver. It will be the first of its kind in Canada.”

Colourstrings Music Kindergarten and Violin Training is an outstanding approach to music and instrumental teaching for young children that was developed in Finland in the Seventies. It introduces young children to music primarily of their own culture in an enjoyable, stimulating and extraordinary way through multi-cultural folk songs and nursery rhymes, movement and dance, rhythm games and listening to classical music.

The Kindergarten Training is suitable for children ages from six months to five years. Once they have completed the Kindergarten, they can continue with Colourstrings Violin Training, where many of the international songs learned in the Kindergarten re-appear in the workbooks and instrumental books.

Laura said, “since I have trained and worked professionally in Scotland where there is a large Celtic population, I will be using a great deal of Scottish and Irish folk songs and dance in my classes.”
