The Sound of the Celtic Soul

VANCOUVER - A concert with one of Ireland's preeminent singers and collectors of traditional and sacred songs will be presented on May 28 at the Canadian Memorial Church at 15th and Burrard in Vancouver.
Noirin Ni Riain, PhD is an internationally acclaimed Irish singer of spiritual songs from many traditions. She has a profound faith in the power of sound as a means of experiencing the divinity of one's life.
Her recordings include Stor Amhran, Soundings, Celtic Soul and Vox de Dube (with the Benedictine monks of Glenstal Abbey). She performs at sacred music festivals worldwide and has been Ireland's cultural ambassador to India. The evening opens with the piano of Neil Weisensel, composer and music director of Canadian Memorial.
Noirin has performed extensively world-wide, twice introducing his Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama in song at United Nations Summits; three times representing Ireland as cultural ambassador in India, shared performances with John Cage, Anjelica Huston, Gregory Peck, Sinead O Connor, Markhus Stockhausen, Matthew Fox, John O’Donohue and David Whyte.
Noirin has just completed her doctorate in theology, the first PhD in theology to be awarded for its uniqueness by the University of Limerick on “Theosony The sound of God: Towards a theology of listening.”
Her repertoire is vast - ranging from her own spiritual sean-nós tradition which is very much pre-Christian, Gregorian chant, chants of Hildegard von Bingen, the Shaker tradition, the bhajans of Rajasthani saint, Mira Bai.
Noirin's performance on May 28 follows a three-day workshop which she presents at Hollyhock on Cortes Island in B.C.
