Canada's Contemporary Celtic Radio Hour

By CAL KOAT

VANCOUVER - Through a psychedelic swirl of guitars, bagpipes and percussion, the voice_over announcer laments, "If only there was a radio program that played the very latest in Celtic fusions, acid croft, Celt punk and cutting edge Celtic traditions... if only." The next voice heard is that of Rowan Atkinson, in character as Black Adder, slyly confiding to his dimwit sidekick, Baldrick, “I have a very, very cunning plan ....” Celt In A Twist is on the air!

For the past two years Celt In A Twist, Sunday afternoons at 4 PM on AM 1470, CJVB has proudly gone where no radio program has gone before, to the leading-edge of Celtic music expression.

If one listens to the ramblings of dusty old historians, the Celts were ancient nomads who wandered away from the Indian subcontinent, eventually settling in Spain's Andalusia and Galicia, in Brittany on the French coast, the Channel Islands, the British Isles and even in Scandinavia.

But today, the Celts still seem to be on the move. The modern global village has seen Celtivity spread to the ends of the earth. You can even find rich Celtic music scenes in Asian countries like Japan!

PATRICIA FRASER - Host of Celt In A Twist

In turn, as Celtic music is touched by the vibrant cultures of the world and the popular cultures of a new generation, its own character becomes enriched. Celt In A Twist is dedicated to exposing the new and multi_faceted voice of Celtic music.

And since you'd be hard pressed to find a Celt at a loss for words, Celt In A Twist host, Patricia Fraser gets the story behind the music from the artists themselves, interviewing every major Celtic star to come within dialing distance of CJVB's studios.

In the month of March alone, Patricia's spoken with Karla Mundy from Cleia (Flook fans should check out their new album, This Side Of Main), Jeremiah McDade who performed with his McDade siblings at the Festival du Bois, Lorne Warr from The Streels (featured as part of CelticFest 2004), and Maria Leahy along with her new sister_in_law, Natalie MacMaster, plus, Larry Kirwan from Black 47 who've just released New York Stories.

Celt In A Twist is earmarked for syndication. If you have friends in other markets who would like to get their Celt In A Twist, contact them through www.worldbeatcanada.com. While you're there, check out the monthly charts and reviews of the latest contemporary Celtic releases.
