Mass In Gaelic
A Memorial Mass in Gaelic for the deceased members of Seattle's Irish community will be celebrated on October 29 at 7:30 PM, and everyone is invited to attend and participate. The Mass will be at Sacred Heart Church, 205 2nd Avenue North (beside the Seattle Center). There is plenty of free parking available in the Church parking lot, and coffee and cookies will be provided during a Social Hour afterwards.
Mass booklets in Gaelic and English will be provided, and the Mass concelebrants will be Dublin-born Father Hugh Duffy SJ, from Seattle University, and Limerick-born Father John Madigan, Pastor of St. Stephen the Martyr Church in Renton.
We invite people to volunteer as musicians, singers, etc., by calling Mary Kelly at (206) 528-1988. People are also encouraged to submit the names of members of Seattle’s Irish community who have died in the past 12 months to be remembered by name during the Mass. Seattle Gaels 25th Anniversary
The Seattle Gaels celebrate their 25th Anniversary with a banquet on November 19 at The Skansonia (www.skansonia.com), 205 NE Northlake Way, Seattle, from 7 PM to midnight. The Seattle Gaels Gaelic Football Club was founded in 1979 and first competed in the North American Championships in 1980. A Seattle Gaels women’ s team was started in 1997 and a Seattle Gaels hurling team in 2003.
During those 25 years, the Gaels won one North American title, and have kept Gaelic Games continuously alive in Seattle. You’re invited to join them as they celebrate this year's accomplishments and those of the past 25 years. Tickets for the dinner dance cost $50 per person and numbers are limited. Matt Talbot Golf
The Annual Matt Talbot Center Golf Tournament will be at 9:30 AM on October 12, at the Harbour Pointe Golf Club in Mukilteo. Named after the Dublin saint, the Matt Talbot Center is a downtown Seattle day center for the homeless, and a counseling center for drug and alcohol addictions. At their next meeting on November 4 at 7:30 PM, Seattle’s Irish Heritage Book Club members discuss Round Ireland with a Fridge by Tony Hawks, a true account of the author's hitchhiking around Ireland with a refrigerator. U.S. Visa Lottery
Applications for the U.S. 2006 Diversity Visa Lottery will be accepted between November 5, 2004 and January 7, 2005. Anyone applying must register on the internet through the website www.dvlottery.state.gov. Paper entries and mail-in requests will not be accepted and the website will be accessible during the registration period. There is no charge for applying for the Visa Lottery.
Liz Carroll
Liz Carroll and John Doyle will be performing at The Tractor in Ballard on November 4. Liz received a National Heritage Fellowship in 1994 from the National Endowment for the Arts for her great influence on Irish music in America, as a performer and a composer, and she was Traditional Performer of the Year for 2000. Celtic Music Festival
The first ever Galway Bay Celtic Music Festival will be held October 27-31, 2004 at the Galway Bay Irish Restaurant & Pub, 880 Point Brown Avenue NE, Ocean Shores. Condolences
Sincere condolences to Tom Clifford, his wife Monica and daughter Ailis, on the death of Tom’s mother, Tina Clifford, in County Limerick on August 31. Tina was a frequent visitor to Seattle and made many friends here over the years. She was hospitalized in July upon her return from a visit to Seattle and died four weeks later.
Condolences also to the family of Francis “Chris” McCaffrey, 55, of Gold Bar, who died September 11, 2004. Chris was born in Cookstown, County Tyrone, and will be remembered for his jokes and laughter. He is survived by his wife Nora and son Francis Jr.
Deepest sympathy is extended to Nancy Keating and to Irish Heritage Club President Rev. Barry Keating on the death of Nancy’s mother, Shirley Hale, in Aberdeen recently, following a long illness. She was 82 and had lived in the Grays Harbor area most of her life.
