Gaelic Football & Hurling Telecasts

The weekly live telecasts of football or hurling games from Ireland continue many Saturdays and every Sunday through September. All televised games in Ireland are shown live at the Irish Emigrant, University Way NE at 52nd Street, call (206) 525-2955. Each weekend usually sees anywhere from two to four games being shown. A telecast season ticket costs only $100 or an individual game $20. The full schedule of games being telecast is listed weekly at www.setanta.com. IHC Elections

The Irish Heritage Club elected new officers and board members for the coming 12 months and Reverend Barry Keating is again club president. New faces on the board of directors include Agnes Roche, Barbara Birney, Charles Hadrann, Melissa Estelle, Nanci Spieker and Patty Sandoval. New Mayor

Seattle's Sister City of Galway has elected its first Labor Party mayor in 14 years with the election of Councillor Catherine Connolly to the post of first citizen. Councillor Connolly arrived at the election meeting on a bicycle and she was elected by nine votes to six, defeating the only other nominee, PD Councillor Donal Lyons. Councillor Lyons visited Seattle as Galway Mayor in 2002. Councillor Connolly assumes the role of mayor for the next 12 months, replacing outgoing Mayor Terry O'Flaherty who by tradition did not run for re-election.

Irish Book Club

The Irish Heritage Book Club meets at 7:30 PM on July 15, at the home of Jane Sepede in north Seattle to discuss The Road to McCarthy: Around the world in search of Ireland by Pete McCarthy. Concertina Concert

Irish concertina musician Noel Hill is in concert on Bainbridge Island on August 13. Noel Hill is one of those standard-setting voices in Irish music today. His virtuosity has firmly established him as the defining Irish concertina player of our time, taking the humble concertina from the households of County Clare to stages all over the world.

The concertina, like Irish music itself, is currently enjoying a tremendous increase in popularity, and Noel Hill is at the forefront of this development, not only as an awe-inspiring performer but also as teacher and a well-respected authority on Ireland's music. The performance will be at the Island Center Hall, 8395 Fletcher Bay Road, Bainbridge Island. Tickets available at the door for $10 adult and $7 youth. For information, call (206) 842-7005.

New Irish Pubs

Pat Coyne opens his new pub, Paddy Coyne's Pub at 1190 Thomas Street, just off Fairview (south of Lake Union near the Seattle Times), on July 19. The Seattle Gaels are arranging a preview pre-opening night on July 17 – contact Tom Lagan at (206) 850-8466 for details.

Condolences

To the family of Dave Sheehan, 85, of Lynnwood, WA, who died on June 19. Dave was a longtime member of the Irish community in the Seattle area, and his wife of 60 years, Ida, and daughters, Shirley Pelan, Sandy Alexander and Susan Matson, survive him.

To Jim and Eloise Cummins of Kennewick, WA, on the death of Eloise's brother Emilio Davila in Burien, WA. Emilio was buried June 25 following a large funeral with a Mariachi band.

To the family of Deirdre Haran Abeid, 48, who taught Irish dancing in eastern Washington for years and whose dancers often competed as the Haran Irish Dancers at Feiseanna around the Pacific Northwest. Deirdre took ill in Ireland while attending the World Irish dance championships and she was later diagnosed with cancer. She died earlier this month in Kettle Falls, about 80 miles northwest of Spokane.
