Team IrelandOrganized by the Seattle Gaels, Ireland's team in the World Cup Seattle soccer tournament defeated England 2-0 in the tournament's opening game on June 4. Both teams were very even in the initial stages of the first half, but Ireland got better as the game progressed and clearly deserved their win. Ireland's first goal came from a penalty taken by Declan Owens following a handball. Then late in the second half, a nice move involving Peter Gibson and Sean Farrell resulted in a great goal that effectively ended the contest. In Team Ireland's game against Bosnia, both teams were evenly matched and a 1-1 draw was a fitting result. Just after halftime, Ireland got an indirect free kick that was expertly finished to the net by Derek Crothers, but Bosnia managed to scramble the equalizer with about five minutes to go. The third game, against Armenia, saw plenty of wasted chances on both sides, but Armenia needed to win to ensure progress in the tournament whereas Ireland just needed a draw. The 0-0 result put Team Ireland through to the finals on August 20-22. Ireland's team is captained by Derek Crothers and one of the stalwarts is former Irish International player Fran O'Brien. The tournament's opening weekend also featured food from every region of the world, community music and dance performances, youth clinics with the Sounders, and a Saturday night concert. Dancers from the Baile Glas Irish Dancing School assisted by uilleann piper Tom Quinn performed before the Ireland-Armenia game. On that day in 1904, Stephen Dedalus and Leopold Bloom each took their epic journeys through Dublin in James Joyce's Ulysses, the world's most highly acclaimed modern novel. In reality, June 16, 1904, was chosen as the date for the book because that was the day when Joyce and Nora Barnacle first "stepped out" together. "Bloomsday", as it is now known, has become a tradition for Joyce enthusiasts all over the world. From Seattle to Dublin, Tokyo to Sydney, Trieste to Paris, cities around the globe hold their own Bloomsday celebrations, usually including readings as well as staged re-enactments and street-side improvisations of scenes from the story. Bloomsday will be celebrated in Seattle on June 16 at 7:30 PM and June 19, at 3 PM, both at Brechemin Auditorium (UW Campus) with a performance of the Wandering Rocks Chapter of Ulysses.
