Red Deer Prepares to Welcome Visitors to 57th Annual Highland Games
RED DEER, ALTA - Plans are well under way for the 57th Red Deer Highland Games that will be held at Red Deer's Westerner Park on June 26. Gates will open at 8 AM for fun and competition for the whole family. Organizers welcome over 300 dance competitors and 14 bands from the four western provinces and NWT. Other competitive events will be the heavy athletics, sheep dog trials and a shortbread competition.
For the less serious attendee, there will be an opportunity to take part in traditional games events like the welly toss. A children’s area will feature a bouncy jumper and miniature golf. Vendors will offer all things Scottish from tartans to tapes. A highlight of the games will be the parade of massed bands.
An afternoon beer garden provides a chance to sit a while and enjoy continuous Celtic entertainment. Featured evening entertainment is the popular Celtic band “St. James’ Gate.”
Visitors to Alberta should note that the Ellerslie Games take place just south of Edmonton the following day, June 27.
