VANCOUVER - On June 18, in the lower Cambrian Hall, the Welsh Society will host an audio-visual presentation of a voyage to the Antarctic on a Russian ice-breaker.
The presenter is Professor Andre-Pierre Benguerol, Emeritus Professor of Medicine at UBC. Professor Benguerol has travelled extensively to some remote and exotic parts of the world. His account of his voyage from Tasmania to Antarctica will be accompanied by some startlingly beautiful photographs of this remote part of the world. Professor Benguerol's presentation will be introduced by long-time Welsh Society member Gareth Prytherch.
Following the presentation, members and guests are invited to a social gathering in the Red Dragon lounge.
On September 11, the Society will host a Celtic Fest at the Cambrian Hall. Entertainment will be provided by a Celtic Band and it is hoped that the event will attract members of all the Lower Mainland Celtic organizations. Details regarding the event will be confirmed and published later.
In November, a Welsh Weekend is being organized, the highlight of which will be a performance by the Vancouver Welsh Men's Choir. Some highly-regarded soloists have also been invited but are not yet confirmed. During the same weekend it is also planned to hold several other events, including a Gymanfa Ganu, a Noson Lawen (Variety Evening) and a presentation by the Dylan Thomas Society.
The Society hopes that proceeds from these events will help boost the fund set up to pay for the roof repairs to the Cambrian Hall. The Vancouver Welsh Men's Choir has already agreed to donate part of the Concert proceeds to the roof fund.
