AN URGENT MESSAGE from the Celtic Heritage Society of Canada

Ground Breaking News for Celtic Cultural Centre
By MALACHY MAHON - President

An urgent public meeting has been called by the Board of Directors of the Celtic Heritage Society of Canada (CHSC) after several meetings with a local developer. A proposal has now been put forth that could see construction of our cultural centre begin within six months.

In order to gauge the level of support from the Celtic community for building the proposed Celtic cultural centre in Burnaby, it is imperative that the community attends this meeting. For this reason, I am directing this urgent message to all members and supporters of the CHSC and readers of The Celtic Connection.

Please understand, this is NOT just another public meeting to garner members or sell tickets for an event. The urgency of this meeting is equivalent to conducting a “needs assessment.”

The bottom line is that the CHSC needs to determine how many of its supporters are passionate enough, committed enough, and willing enough to tangibly show that having their own cultural home is important to them and to their families of today and their families of tomorrow.

In this multi-cultural melting pot of British Columbia, it would appear that every ethnic group has managed to build or buy their own cultural centre or hall. They have been able to nurture and preserve their heritage in this foreign land; they have come together and stayed together as a community.

What the Celtic Heritage Society has tried to do in the last two years is to give an identity and a cultural home to the Celtic community of this province. However, before we take the step of no return (building the centre), this Board must be certain of the total level of support, dedication and commitment that will be given to us.

Throughout the lifetime of this Society, it has operated with only a handful of dedicated individuals. Major work has been done, the Society has been brought to a high level of awareness. However, if we are to build this Centre, it will take more than a handful of people. It will take the entire community to rally behind us and give us the financial resources and the human resources needed to forge ahead.

The meeting will be held on Monday, May 31 at 7 PM sharp in the Panorama Room at the Executive Inn, located at 4201 Lougheed Highway (at Willingdon Avenue) in Burnaby, B.C.

For more information, please call the Society's office at (604) 299-2019, e-mail at info@celticheritage.org, or drop by the office at 3847Hastings Street in Burnaby.
