Awards for BC’s Champion Highland Dancers

VANCOUVER - Friends of Isabel Waddell recently established a bursary in honour of her 90th birthday. The first bursary of $100 was presented to a deserving BCHDA dancer at the year end April 18 competition.

OVERALL TOP PREMIER DANCERS for the three winter competitions were Vince Collins (15 years and under), Caitlin Wilson (11 years and under), Jenni-Leigh Harder (17 years and under), Stephanie Wilson (13 years and under), and Katie Trydal (adult).

Nominations were received from dance studios for a dancer who “demonstrates a love of Highland dancing and exemplary sportsmanship,” and nominees were Alexander Sang, Brooke Bartlett, Nicole Harstone, Randi Otto, Julia Gartner, Cameron Collins, Rebecca Turley, Marianne Hoffard, and Erika Van Vliet. One name was pulled out of the hat, which was Brooke Bartlett’s – and in addition to the cheque, she was presented with a perpetual trophy.

Also presented at the April 18 competition were awards for the overall top Premier dancers for the three winter competitions. Winners were Vince Collins (15 years and under), Caitlin Wilson (11 years and under), Jenni-Leigh Harder (17 years and under), Stephanie Wilson (13 years and under), and Katie Trydal (adult).

Katie Trydal recently travelled to Melbourne, Australia to compete in the Australian Champion of Champions, an event that is held every two years and attracts over 600 dancers from Australia and overseas. Katie placed fifth in the 16 and over section out of over 40 dancers.

If you would like to see Highland dancing, be sure to visit the United Scottish Highland Games that will be held on June 16 at the Coquitlam Town Centre Stadium. The City of Vancouver Championships will be held in the morning and other dancing events in the afternoon will feature dancers as young as four years of age!
