Welsh Society Update: New Fundraising Campaign Launched for Roof Repairs
By EIFION WILLIAMS
VANCOUVER - Once again the Vancouver Welsh Society is faced with a large bill for repairs to the roof of the Cambrian Hall. The Society is currently awaiting a professional evaluation of the extent of the deterioration in the roof of the 75-year old building and the estimated cost of repairs.
A fund-raising campaign has been launched by the Society's Executive and several fund-raising events are planned for the coming year.
Meanwhile, regular activities by the Society's members are continuing. The May Gymanfa Ganu (Singing Festival) will be held at the Hall on May 2. The Gymanfa is always well-attended, drawing participants from throughout British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest.
The Cambrian Singers are enjoying a busy schedule this spring, having already performed at five locations. Their next two performances are at St. Jude’s Anglican Home in Vancouver on April 14 and at Richmond Lion’s Manor on April 20.
The Welsh Society’s Annual Golf Tournament will take place on July 3. Information on the Tournament can be obtained from Tecwyn Roberts (604) 464-2760 or Gwyn Evans (604) 271-3134.
Some enthusiastic members have also established a Welsh Walking Group which meets every Monday. The Group has already walked along the Richmond Dyke and around Stanley Park, Beaver Lake, Lost Lagoon and Jericho Beach. Anyone interested in joining the group should contact Mary Lewis at (604) 331-1573.
One of the Society’s more enthusiastic members, Lara Evans, recently left to follow a Masters’ Program in English at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth. The Society wishes her well and hopes that she will return to Vancouver on completion of her studies.
