Youth at the Scottish Hall
By KEN ROGERSON
VANCOUVER - Some of the talented youth who will carry forth Scottish heritage in Vancouver displayed their talents at the February 7 event presented by the Vancouver Gaelic Societies at the Scottish Cultural Centre.
Master of Ceremonies for the evening was a spirited Christine Louden who led the evening’s program by showing her abilities as a Highland Dancer. Other performers included Ainsley MacCallum-Reid, Christy Avril, Kevin Louden, Lillian Lind and Elizabeth McIver.
Members of the various Scottish Societies have deep concerns about the future of Scottish culture on the west coast due to the dwindling numbers of Scottish immigrants to Canada. If some of the traditions are struggling, it is nice to see second and even third generations trying to keep the music, dance and songs alive. We, the old Scots, applaud and encourage their efforts. Thanks must go to the ladies of the Gaelic Society who provided an excellent supper spread. Good job there was dancing to keep down those extra pounds.
